Job Centre Plus Adviser Discretion Fund

Each Job Centre Plus around the UK has a little-known Adviser Discretion Fund (ADF) which can provide Job Seekers with a grant of up to £300 in any 12-month period, to help cover the costs of transport, childcare, work clothes, tools and more (during the job search or to enable an offer of employment to be accepted) if an adviser believes it'll make the transition back into work easier.

The cash can be requested for any reasonable expense yet no one has a right to the money and it’s completely at the discretion of each Job Centre Plus adviser.

Previously the grants have only been available to people who have been unemployed for six months or more, but now everyone claiming Job Seekers Allowance, or on one of the New Deal Schemes, is eligible from day one. For 2009/10 over £23 million has been set aside to cover the fund so if you think it’ll help you, speak to an advisor at your local Job Centre Plus.

Kleeneze 'Shop Local' Campaign

Kleeneze has recently launched their 'shop local' campaign to support local small businesses and small traders.

Small businesses and independent traders form the backbone of communities. They offer a personal service and now, more than ever, they need the support of their communities as they face increased competition from high street giants and global brands.

Kleeneze have a network of self-employed distributors who provide a personal home shopping service to their customers. To show their support for distributors and their fellow small traders Kleeneze have launched a ‘Shop Local’ campaign and have created a poster that highlights the reasons why shoppers should spend their money locally.

Local retailers can help by displaying the Kleeneze Shop Local Poster in their shops and shoppers can supprt these local retailers by spending their money with local independent retailers and telling their friends and family why it’s important to shop locally. The reasons are:

  • It keeps money in the local economy – every £1 spent with a local supplier keeps £1.76 in the local economy (source: New Economics Foundation)
  • Small businesses offer a personal service and extra care – local business owners know their customers and are able to offer a more personal service
  • It maintains local character – supporting local businesses ensures their survival and maintains the local provision of services and character of local communities
  • It’s better for the environment – shopping locally promotes fewer and shorter car journeys and local stores use less CO2 than superstores (sources: DEFRA, Sheffield Hallam University)
